3 ½ minutes that included 4 Swarm goals set the tone for the night from which the Admirals never recovered from, as they went down 5-1 in the second game on the NZIHL Auckland opening weekend double header at Paradice, Botany.
Any hope the Admirals had on building on their gutsy opening game performance against the defending champions were crushed with 4 Swarm goals in the span of 3 ½ minutes in the 1st period on Sunday night. Charlie Huber was the home town hero for the Swarm as he netted hatrick in that span and then added his fourth late in the second period.
With the scores tied at 0-0 midway through a close first period, Huber broke the deadlock netting his first for the night. 3 minutes later he had and hat-trick and Ian Wannamaker had added his own goal to give the Swarm a 4-0 lead they would never give up. From there the emotions began to run high for both teams and the end of the period turned into a stop start physical affair as seven penalties were dished out in the final eight minutes. The Swarm ended the period in a commanding position despite being out-shot 7-12.
The second period continued the game’s stop start nature with both teams spending plenty of time in the plenty box. To the Admirals credit they kept attacking the Swarm, but were unable to break through. With 4 minutes left in the period a mistimed pinch and hit by Admirals defenseman Alexandre DeVaux lead to a 3 on 1 Swarm break out, which Huber calmly slotted up stairs over Admirals goalie Rick Parry.
The Admirals captain Darren Blong finally put his team on the board early in the third on a 5-3 powerplay. This saw the game open up more with both teams having plenty more chances to score. But it was all too late for the Admirals who were unable to really bounce back from the early 4 goal blitz. While they battled hard and never gave up, the life was sucked out of the game early leaving the Swarm comprehensive winners 5-1, as time on the clock ran down.
Notes: Shots once again for the second game in a row were close at 35 -33 to the Swarm.
