After an even first period to Sunday’s game the Swarm once again took advantage of Admirals penalties scoring three powerplay goals on there way to another dominating 6-0 win over their cross town rivals.
Admiral’s goalie Luke Christie made his NZIHL starting debut on Sunday night after he had replaced Rick Parry for the third period of Saturday night’s game, in the hope that fresh blood may shake things up. And after 20 minutes the Admirals were very much in the game, having plenty of chances that they were unable to convert.
However, as has been the theme for the last three games between these teams, the Swarm after sucking up early pressure managed to score first courtesy of a Josh Hay powerplay goal midway through the second. Jordan Challis then made it 2-0 when he was left alone in the slot 3 minutes later. With the momentum changing the Admirals struggled to keep pace and before the period was out the Sebastian Dahlstrom added yet another powerplay goal to make it 3-0.
The start of the third saw the Swarm not willing to sit on their lead as they had done on Saturday night. They continued to dominate and 5 minutes in they had added another 3 goals to KC Ball, Hay and Dahlstrom and had chased an Admirals goalie out of a game for the second time in a row. The Swarm never gave Admirals a chance in the third outshooting them 14-5.
The 6-0 shutout win allowed the Swarm to keep pace with the Canterbury Red Devils, 1 point behind them at the top of the table after the regional rounds.
Notes: When you think of hockey rivalries, you think: Montreal Canadiens v Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers v Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche v Detroit Red Wings. Well at this rate you can add the Botany Swarm v West Auckland Admirals to that list.
After playing each other 4 times this season it is obvious to see that these teams love to hate each other and it’s showing on the ice. Both teams have picked up the physical intensity over the last 2 weeks.
However, the West Auckland Admirals have never actually beaten the Swarm in the 14 NZIHL meetings between the two teams. Their record stands at 0 wins – 3 ties – 11 losses.
