Danny Smith saved his best game for the last as the Admirals kicked off their last weekend of games for 2008 with an 11-2 thrashing of the Dunedin Thunder.
The Admirals and Ice Black forward tallied 4 goals and 2 assists as the Admirals dominated proceeding throughout the evening despite the Thunder scoring the first goal of the game early in the first.
In what turned out to be a free-flowing fast game with little stoppages or penalties. Damian Watson gave the Thunder early hope when he ripped a shot over the shoulder of Admirals goalie Rick Parry. However the lead was short lived and the Admirals equalised through their captain, Darren Blong 4 minutes later. Although the shots were even at 12 a piece at the end of the first period the Admirals and gone on to take a 3-1 lead through the first 2, of Smith’s 4 goals.
The second period saw the Admirals take complete control of the game, out-shooting the Thunder 17-9. Smith completed his hatrick with the first goal of the 2nd and the Admirals took a commanding 6-1 lead at the end of the period. Despite there being a lack of penalties, it looked as though the Admirals were constantly on the powerplay as their puck possession was outstanding in the offensive end.
Parry had even less to do in the third period as the Thunder could only manage 7 shots on goal to the Admirals 20. A goal 38s seconds into the period saw Thunder goalie Jeff Mansfield pulled and replaced by Vince Mitalas. However the change did not help. With the Thunder playing like a team that had given up, the Admirals continued to consistently put up the goals at regular intervals. The Admirals were even allowed to look threatening when they were short-handed and tailed their 2nd goal down a man in the period. 5 goals were added in the 3rd to make it 11-1 before the Thunder’s Peter Lamb snuck one past Parry late in the game. The final hooter sounded with well deserved win to the Admirals.
