Keeping Young Players In Sport

Keeping Young Players In Sport

By News

Why do young players walk away?

Too many young New Zealanders are being driven away from sport. It’s important we understand the reasons young people are walking away to help keep them in the game.

As Administrators, Coaches and Parents, there’s a lot we can all continue to focus on to ensure that we keep our kids in sport.

The AIHA team have worked hard to put together a schedule that is fair and has limited breaks throughout the season. Please be aware that due to other sports and activities that use the ice at both rinks, there is only so much ice time available to work with and we’ve done the best we can with the ice time available to us.

Expressions of Interest Open for AIHA Representative Team Staff

By News

Dear Parent/Player,

AIHA is seeking expressions of interest for head coach, manager and assistant coach positions for our Under 15 and Under 18 Auckland Representative Teams who will compete in their respective National Competitions.

We are looking to fill the following positions:

  • U15 team head coach, assistant coach, manager
  • U18 team head coach, assistant coach, manager

U15 Auckland Representative Team

The U15 team is the entry point for all kids to compete on a National Level. This season, we are looking for a staff who are focused on developing and including a wide squad of players. Many of these players will have just moved up from playing cross-ice 3 v 3 hockey.

The qualities we are looking for from a coaching and management staff at this level are patience, good communication, and an ability to lead a squad with the main focus being on development.

Player development and inclusion are the main goals of the U15 Team for the 2020 NZBIHL Season.

AIHA would like to move to two Auckland Teams for the 2021 season, development and inclusion of all players is a necessary step toward this goal. Therefore, the main focus of the staff will be to create a positive environment for all squad players that is centred around their development.

If you are interested in any of these roles, please send your expression of interest specifying which role you wish to apply for (e.g. head coach or assistant coach or manager) to generalmanager@aiha.org.nz by 12pm Monday 16 March.

U18 Auckland Representative Team

The U18 team is the next step for players wanting to compete at the National Level. This season, we are looking for a staff who will develop and involve a wide squad of players to ensure further development for everyone on the squad.

The qualities we are looking for from a coaching and management staff are patience, good communication, attention to detail, and the ability to lead a squad in a competitive environment.

Further player development for all squad members and a healthy competitive environment are the main goals of the U18 Team for the 2020 NZMIHL Season.

If you are interested in any of these roles, please send your expression of interest specifying which role you wish to apply for (e.g. head coach or assistant coach or manager) to generalmanager@aiha.org.nz by 12pm Monday 16 March.

Kind Regards,
Auckland Ice Hockey Association

2020 Adult Hockey League (AHL) Season Update

By News

Dear Players,

We’ve been hard at work putting together the finishing touches on the 2020 AHL season and below is an update on where we are currently.

Registrations:
We are currently 90% full on registrations and are waiting for the last group of people to register so we can paint a clearer picture of who is on which team etc. Any players who haven’t registered yet are encouraged to do so ASAP.

The early registration payment discount has now passed, but there is still fee savings to be had if you pay any or all of your individual monthly instalment fees prior to 1 March 2020.

Schedule:
The schedule is currently being created based on the same teams as last season, and with them all placed in the same divisions. This is very much status quo from last season. NB: Final team numbers will depend on the total amount of people that have registered.

The schedule this season has become more complex than ever before, we appreciate your understanding with how the schedule is crafted and that sometimes there is no ice available to us. We will always do our best to minimise the length of time in between games.

Player Grading:
We have a number of new registrations to the AHL this season who are excited to get graded and be placed in teams. We are currently working through the grading process with these individuals. Along with assessing any other players who wish to move between divisions.

Season Start:
The season will kick off on Saturday 21st March with three games on at Paradice Avondale. Paradice Avondale has just had maintenance done and the lines and ice are looking fresh, crisp, and ready for puck drop – a big thank you to the team at Paradice for their hard work here.

If you have any questions, please email info@aiha.org.nz
