The NZIHF is pleased to announce that applications are now open for all female players born in the years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 interested in selection for the NZWU18 team. This talented, passionate and successful team will be competing at the Challenge Cup of Asia which it is proposed will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2018 (TBC). More information about this tournament will be made available as and when it is known.

The Auckland U14’s Representative team hosted defending champions Canterbury over the weekend of July 8th and 9th and came away with two convincing victories over their visiting counterparts. 

Saturday’s game one was a clean sweep across all three periods with Auckland totalling up a massive 72 shots on goal and taking a 9-0 victory in the process. The team played well together to bring home a clean victory, with form that looks promising for the rest of the season.

Sunday’s game two was just as one sided with Auckland dominating from start to finish, scoring a goal in the first 90 seconds of period one and adding 8 more to the score sheet before the period ended. The second and third periods were played well by the entire team, with another 4 goals scored in each respectively, and allowing only two goals in by the opposition. At the sound of the final buzzer, the score was 17-2 in favour of Auckland.

The U14’s next host Queenstown in Auckland on August 12th and 13th. 

The Panthers successfully defended the Pure NZ Cup in their second match up against the Seawolves, claiming a 5-0 victory.

The first period was fraught with penalties, with the Seawolves giving up 5 power plays to the Panthers,  yet still managing a great defensive effort to allow no goals with one man in the box each time.  However, in between power plays, the Panthers managed to sneak in a goal finishing the first period with a 1-0 lead.

The second period also featured a number of penalties, this time with the Panthers committing 3 offences for tripping and boarding, however the Seawolves were unable to capitalise on the power plays. Mid way through the period, the Panthers scored their second goal to bring the score 2-0 in their favour at the end of the period. 

The third period a more friendly affair with no more penalties, however the Panthers continued their attack scoring a further 3 goals to end the game 5-0.

The new Cup format for the 2017 season will see Junior teams compete against one another on a monthly basis, with the winning team on the night holding the Cup (and bragging rights!) for the following month.

The next scheduled games for the Cup Series are set to take place on August 14th.

The Hornets secured the Bidois Cup on Monday July 3rd in what was the second round of the AIHA Cup Series for 2017. 

The game started off with a goal in the first 30 seconds of period 1 to the Hornets, who added to this 15 minutes later to bring the score 2-0. With just 45 seconds to go in the first period, the Pythons struck back, bringing the game 2-1 in favour of the Hornets at the first intermission.

The Hornets did not relent in their attack, scoring another 2 goals in period 2, leaving the game 4-1 as the teams hit the locker room, waiting for period 3. 

In the third and final period, the only team to feature on the score sheet was the Pythons with a single goal. The final buzzer sounded giving the Hornets a 4-2 victory and claim to the Bidois Cup for the next month.

The Auckland Under 17 Representative Team travelled to Christchurch over the weekend for their third away game in a row, for what promised to be a tough weekend.

Saturday’s game one against Canterbury was hard fought, with both teams finishing period one 0-0. Within the first 90 seconds of the second period, Auckland scored to take the lead 1-0, however this was quickly equalised by Canterbury, who then went on to score a further two goals in the period, bringing the game to 3-1. Auckland managed to score a great goal on power play to bring it back to a one goal game just as the teams hit the locker room for the final period, bringing the score 3-2 to Canterbury.

The third period was just as intense with Canterbury holding a 5-4 lead with 3 minutes to the final buzzer, until an interference call against Canterbury gave Auckland a penalty shot. Auckland converted this penalty to a goal, taking the game to overtime, where just 3 minutes in, Auckland scored the game winning goal.

Sunday’s game two was also a tough one, although the score line suggested otherwise with Auckland finishing the second period up 7-0. Canterbury attempted somewhat of a comeback in period 3, scoring 4 unanswered goals to bring the game to 7-4 in Auckland’s favour. However, Auckland’s dominance in periods one and two were too much, with the final buzzer sounding and awarding Auckland the 7-4 win.

The team now has a bit of a break until the next games held in Auckland on September 2^nd and 3^rd against Canterbury.

The first round of the Junior Representative Competition is complete and Auckland came away with two great victories over their hosts, Dunedin.

All went well in both games with all players contributing to the Saturday 11-1 and Sunday 8-0 wins with a great team spirit throughout the weekend.

The Pythons came out on top against the Hornets in the first round of the AIHA Cup Series, a monthly tournament held during the regular Junior season.

The Pythons beat the Hornets 8-6 on May 29th to claim the Bidois Cup in what was a close game right to the very end. 

With the game tied up at the end of Period 2, both teams would have to dig deep to secure the win in Period 3. 

A goal to the Pythons in the first 4 minutes of Period 3 gave them a 6-5 lead, and this was quickly added to just 59 seconds later to make the score 7-5 in favour of the Pythons. 

The score remained the same until just 88 seconds to the final buzzer when the Hornets found an opening and brought it back to a one goal game, 7-6 to the Pythons.

With just 19 seconds to go the Pythons struck again, extending their lead in the final moments of the game to end up winning 8-6.
