Remembering “Big Al” Tamepo

By News
Alan Tamepo, Ngāti Porou, longtime Auckland Ice Hockey Association referee and longer-time ice hockey player and fanatic, passed away last Friday 29 January. Al is survived by his loving family, Anita, Adele, Brooke, and Charmaine.
Alan – “Big Al” – began and ended his active player career with the Manuwai ice hockey club. During his time with Manuwai, Al established himself as a gritty player and a great teammate. He wasn’t shy about letting the referees know what he thought about their calls, either.
So, it was with some surprise that Braden O’Loughlin, then AIHA Referee-in-Chief, received Al’s request, asking to learn how to become a referee. Braden thought Al had lost a bet with one of his Manuwai teammates, but Al was serious. And the Association needed referees. Before Al’s first game in stripes, Karl Peni teased him about becoming a referee. Al told him he better quiet down or he’d spend the game in the penalty box. As it turned out, Al didn’t assess Karl any penalties. Instead, they spent most of the game laughing as Al complained about having to pick up the pucks off the ice for the faceoffs.
And that was one of the great things about Al as a teammate and a referee. He loved to talk and he loved to share. Players remember him as one of the best on-ice officials to banter with. Al had a natural feel for the game and was all business when it came to officiating. But he did it with a generosity of spirit that won the respect and affection of all who had the privilege of taking the ice with him.
As a referee, Al was dependable and always wanted to learn more. He seldom turned down assignments, he always showed up, and he worked many, many games. He officiated AIHA youth and adult-league games, and he was awarded AIHA Referee-of-the-Year award more than once (an award for the official who had given the most during the season). Al worked NZIHF youth representative league games, attended NZIHF national officiating camps, and worked as a linesman in the NZIHL. Lastly, he mentored newer, younger officials, giving advice and helping to build the future of officiating in Auckland. He gave back heaps to the game he loved, and he was loved by all who knew him.

Referee and ice hockey friends of Al are invited to drop by Bricklane Restaurant & Bar, New Lynn, on Wednesday 3 February, 6-7pm, to share a glass and remember him

2021 Under 9 & Under 12 Super League Registrations Now Open

By News

Registrations for the 2021 Super League are now open.

We are pleased to announce that registrations for our 2021 playing leagues are now open! Read below to find out about changes to the 2021 season and new registration process.

New Registration Programme:
AIHA has made the decision to move to a new provider for its registration system. We will now be using esportsdesk for all league registrations, scheduling and game results data. Many of you will already be familiar with this system as we have used it for scheduling and game results for many years, and we’ve now made the decision to use their registration add-on to bring everything under one roof.

Click here to register online now.

Click here to view a guide on how to register.

Click here to view FAQs about the new registration system and the 2021 season.

What Is the Super League?

The Super League offers children under 12 years old an environment to learn or extend their ice hockey skills and game play with the emphasis on fun.

Games are 3 on 3, cross-ice with approximately 2 lines per team.

The ice slots for the Super League are as follows:

  • Avondale: 8:15am – 10:15am
  • Botany: 8:30am – 10:30am

The same payment system will be used and each game will be one clip from a Learn to Play concession card per player.

Who Can Play?

Anyone can play so long as they meet the age requirements – Under 12 years old for the U12 League and under 9 years old for the U9 league. Players must remain under 12 for the entire calendar year of the season. However, if this means you miss out (eg: born late in the year) special dispensation may apply to allow you to play in this league. Please email info@aiha.org.nz to request more information about this.

Which team will I play on?

The AIHA coaching staff will assign players to teams based on their skill level, to ensure teams are fair/balanced throughout the league.

When Does The Season Start?

The 2021 Super League season will begin in late March, however you must register now to secure your spot – there are only a limited amount of places on each team!

The full schedule will be made available in March, on our scheduling website: www.aucklandicehockeyhub.co.nz

Playing Fees:

  • Super League Registration Fee – $55.00
  • Playing fees will remain the same as last year – simply bring your Learn to Play concession card or pay the casual rate of $20.00 per game.

How To Register

Registrations are processed on AIHA’s Club Management software, esportsdesk. You must register to play and be assigned to a team. Players who do not register will not be able to compete in the 2021 season.

There is a registration fee of $55.00 per player, per year. This fee covers the administration costs, registering Super League players with the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF) so they can play in NZIHF events and tournaments. The fee also covers costs for referees, replacing team jerseys, pucks, trophies and medals for the season.

Questions / More Information:

If you have any questions or require more information, please email info@aiha.org.nz and we’ll get back to you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs:)

Why have you changed registration system?

We have been using the esportsdesk platform for over 5 years for our scheduling and game results needs, and have now decided to use their registration and payment add-on, to bring everything under one roof. esportsdesk is specifically built for ice hockey, and is used throughout Australia and North America.

Why am I paying money to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF) during registration?

All regional/club ice hockey registrations in New Zealand have a component which is paid to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF), as the governing body for ice hockey in NZ. If you have previously played ice hockey at AIHA or any other NZ club, you have already been paying this amount, however it has likely been bundled in to one “registration” fee shown on previous registration programmes. With the move to our new registration programme, this amount is now shown as a separate line item and is paid directly to the NZIHF.

So in short: You have already been paying this amount, you’re now just seeing it as a separate line item as part of your registration.

But who is the NZIHF and what do they do for me? Why do I have to pay this amount?

The NZIHF is the governing body for ice hockey activity in New Zealand. The registration fee you pay contributes to the running of the NZIHF. The NZIHF helps fund ice hockey at all levels throughout New Zealand, including helping fund regional clubs, donation of gear/equipment, funding and support of national (NZIHL and representative teams) and international representative teams. This registration fee helps to grow and develop the sport of ice hockey in New Zealand.

How will fees be paid?

Your registration fee will be paid via credit/debit card during registration. Playing fees will remain the same as last year – simply bring your Learn to Play concession card or pay the casual rate of $20.00 per game.

I don't have a credit/debit card - how can I register and pay for my fees?

Our registration data has shown only a very small amount of people choose to pay via bank transfer. We strongly encourage all members to pay their fees via credit/debit card as it automates your fee payments, meaning after you register, you don’t have to log in to your account constantly to manually pay fees.

If you do not have a credit/debit card and wish to pay via bank transfer, please email info@aiha.org.nz and we will make suitable arrangements for you.

Who Can Play?

Bantam League: Players must remain under 15 for the entire calendar year of the season. However, if this means you miss out (eg: born late in the year) special dispensation may apply to allow you to play in this league. Please email info@aiha.org.nz to request more information about this.

Junior League: Players must remain under 18 for the entire calendar year of the season. However, if this means you miss out (eg: born late in the year) special dispensation may apply to allow you to play in this league. Please email info@aiha.org.nz to request more information about this.

Playing Fees:

Due to the cost of ice time increasing and other operational expenses, playing fees have increased slightly for the 2021 season. The playing fees have been split across 6 instalments, which makes it fairer for those who only play part of the season (eg: injury) and helps spread out the payments.

With the new registration system, all payments will be processed via credit card or debit card, and should you choose an instalment plan, the amount shown below will automatically come off your credit card on the specified due date. You will be emailed a few days prior to the instalment date to remind you that this will occur.

2021 Playing fees can be paid in bulk or instalments, with options as below:

  • AIHA Registration Fee – Due at time of registration: $105.00 ($75.00 if paid by 14th February 2021)
  • NZIHF Registration Fee – Due at time of registration:  $40.00
  • Ice Fee Instalment 1 – Due at time of registration: $149.00

  • Ice Fee Instalment 5 – Due 16th August 2021 $149.00
  • Ice Fee Instalment 6 – Due 20th September 2021: $149.00

Season Information:

The 2021 Bantam & Junior League season will start in April (we will communicate the exact dates shortly), and will be structured as follows:

  • Monday Nights: Bantam & Junior League games at both rinks (alternating each week)
  • Tuesday Nights  Combined Bantam & Junior League Practice – Avondale
  • Thursdays Nights: Combined Bantam & Junior League Practice – Botany
  • Sundays Mornings: Combined Bantam & Junior League Practice – Alternates between Avondale & Botany

Times to be confirmed once registration numbers are known. Times will be similar to the 2020 season.

The full schedule will be available on our scheduling website prior to the season starting – click here

Officiating:

The Adult Hockey League needs referees! Without referees we cannot run games and we have been running pretty thin on the bench over recent seasons. So, if you would like to try on the stripes and engage with the game in a different way, join the “third team!” We will train you and get you up to speed in no time! Contact referee@aiha.org.nz for more information.

Teams & Rosters:

Teams and rosters will be named closer to the start of the season launch, once registrations have been processed.

Under 9 and Under 12 Super League Registrations:

If you have a child that plays in the Super League, you can register them at the same time. Read more here: www.aiha.org.nz/2021-super-league-registrations-open

With the move to our new registration programme, this amount is now shown as a separate line item and is paid directly to the NZIHF.

As an example, in 2020 the early bird registration fee was $109 – $35  of this was the NZIHF fee, and $64.00 of this was the AIHA fee. AIHA charges a registration fee to help cover league administration costs such as goals, pucks, referees, linesman, score bench and other operational expenses. In 2021, the two are now shown as separate line items of $40 (NZIHF registration fee) and $75 (AIHA registration fee)

So in short: You have already been paying this amount, you’re now just seeing it as a separate line item as part of your registration.
