Learn to Play Ice Hockey in Auckland

Our Kiwi Ice Hockey School (the name of our Learn to Play programme) is run all year round at both the Avondale and Botany rinks. Everyone learns basic hockey skills and game play, with the emphasis on fun!

The Kiwi Ice Hockey School programme caters for kids from ages 5 to 13. We coach kids at the same level and will usually have 4 or 5 groups on the ice, all at different skill levels and abilities.

No prior experience is required, and the Kiwi Ice Hockey School programme takes place at two ice rinks on weeknights as follows:

Avondale:
Paradice Avondale Ice Rink
Mondays 5:45pm – 6:45pm
Wednesdays 5:45pm – 6:45pm

Calendar and Costs:

Registration:  $35.00 per year per child*

Session Cost: $25.00 per session at the casual rate, or $200.00 for 10 sessions on a concession card.

Gear Hire: Should you need to hire gear, the cost for this is $40.00 per school term, along with a $50.00 refundable bond.

We have EFTPOS, credit card and cash facilities available at each Learn to Play night, along with our team who can answer any questions you may have.

*Registering for Learn to Play includes a child season pass to all regular season NZIHL and NZWIHL games in Auckland, when accompanied by a paying adult.

Learn to Play – Gear Hire

Safety is paramount, and to assist new players in the program, AIHA offers a gear hire service to enable kids to get out on the ice for minimal cost. The gear hire includes everything the player needs to participate in the Learn to Play programme:

  • Helmet
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Gloves
  • Pants
  • Socks
  • Shin pads
  • Stick
  • Skates

The hire cost for a child is $40 for each Term, plus a $50 Bond which we will refund after all the gear has been returned. Most of the gear has been donated by players who have outgrown their equipment, although AIHA is gradually adding to our gear library. Purchasing your own gear at some stage, or donations, would be appreciated as this will allow us to continually develop the program.

The AIHA ‘Learn to Play’ program is run year round during the school term at both the Avondale and Botany rinks. Everyone learns basic hockey skills and game play, with the emphasis on fun and best of all, no prior experience is necessary!

Our Learn to Play program caters for kids from 4 years of age through to senior high school students. We try to coach kids at the same level and will usually have 4 or 5 groups on the ice, all at different skill levels and abilities.

As part of your free trial, we will supply all ice hockey gear required for your child. Simply turn up to the rink and we’ll take care of the rest!
