Registrations for the 2023 Adult Hockey League (AHL) are now open.
We are pleased to announce that registrations for our 2023 playing leagues are now open! Read below to find out about changes to the 2023 season and how to register.
Who Can Play?
Any player that turns 18 in the calendar year of the season may play in the AHL.
Playing Fees:
Unfortunately, the ice time costs AIHA incurs have increased significantly, along with increases to other operational expenses. With this in mind, playing fees have increased slightly for the 2023 season, however we have decided to not pass on all of these cost increases to our members.
All payments will be processed via credit/debit card, and should you choose an instalment plan, the amount shown below will automatically come off your credit/debit card on the specified due date. You will be emailed a few days prior to the instalment date to remind you that this will occur.

Season Information:
The 2023 AHL season will run starting 25th March and finishing mid-November, and will feature a 20 game regular season + playoffs. The timeslots for games are listed below – note: we are awaiting the exact timeslots to be confirmed, however expect them to be in line with what you are used to from previous years, such as:
Saturdays at Avondale: 4:15pm – 5:15pm, 5:30pm – 6:30pm and 6:45pm – 7:45pm
Saturdays at Botany: 4:45pm – 5:45pm, 6:00pm – 7:00pm and 7:15pm – 8:15pm
Sundays at Botany: 4:45pm – 5:45pm, 6:00pm – 7:00pm and 7:15pm – 8:15pm
Mondays at Avondale: 7:00pm – 8:00pm, 8:15pm – 9:15pm and 9:30pm – 10:30pm
Mondays at Botany: 6:45pm – 7:45pm, 8:00pm – 9:00pm and 9:15pm – 10:15pm
Once the Bantam & Junior League season begins, AHL games will be played in the last slot on Monday nights only.

Officiating:
The Adult Hockey League needs referees! Without referees we cannot run games and we have been running pretty thin on the bench over recent seasons. So, if you would like to try on the stripes and engage with the game in a different way, join the “third team!” We will train you and get you up to speed in no time! Why am I paying $55.00 to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF) during registration?
All regional/club ice hockey registrations in New Zealand have a component which is paid to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation (NZIHF), as the governing body for ice hockey in NZ. If you have previously played ice hockey at AIHA or any other NZ club, you have already been paying this amount, however it has likely been bundled in to one “registration” fee shown on previous registration programmes. With the move to our new registration programme, this amount is now shown as a separate line item and is paid directly to the NZIHF.
AIHA charges a registration fee to help cover league administration costs such as goals, pucks, referees, linesman, score bench and other operational expenses.
But who is the NZIHF and what do they do for me? Why do I have to pay this amount?
The NZIHF is the governing body for ice hockey activity in New Zealand. The registration fee you pay contributes to the running of the NZIHF. The NZIHF helps fund ice hockey at all levels throughout New Zealand, including helping fund regional clubs, donation of gear/equipment, funding and support of national (NZIHL and representative teams) and international representative teams. This registration fee helps to grow and develop the sport of ice hockey in New Zealand.
For adult league players, you directly benefit from the NZIHF. An example of this in 2020 was the NZIHF’s financial support to AIHA so that we could complete our full 20-game season. Future adult development is planned for 2023 and beyond, including potential national adult non-check tournaments and player development.
How will fees be paid?

With our registration system, all payments will be processed via credit/debit card, and should you choose an instalment plan, the amount shown below will automatically come off your credit/debit card on the specified due date. You will be emailed a few days prior to the instalment date to remind you that this will occur.
I don't have a credit or debit card - how can I register and pay for my fees?
Our registration data has shown only a very small amount of people choose to pay via bank transfer. We strongly encourage all members to pay their fees via credit/debit card as it automates your fee payments, meaning after you register, you don’t have to log in to your account constantly to manually pay fees.

Who can take part in the 2023 AHL season?
Any male or female player aged 18 and over.
When will the 2023 AHL season run?
We aim to schedule the season with similar start and end dates to what you are used to. Season starts 26th March with finals in mid-November.
Who can be a team manager?
Any player can be a team manager, though this will depend on vacancies with existing team managers and/or whether an existing manager chooses to continue their role next season.
How can new people join the AHL?
New players are welcome to join the AHL and will be evaluated by the player grading sub-committee at a scrimmage or training session, to determine the most appropriate division for them. They will then be placed in a team depending on team and numbers requirements.
How will I know if I need to be moved divisions?
Any players that fall under the category of needing to move divisions (eg: due to skill level not suitable for current division) will be contacted directly by the General Manager or Head Coach to discuss the reasons why the player needs to be moved and available options. Rest assured that this will affect only a small minority of players, and AIHA will make suitable arrangements to ensure this is performed fairly and taking in to account the player’s interests.
